Version: 1.0.1
Difficult level: 2/5
Status: Tested and works fine, needs more images and info.

Introduction

In this tutorial there is a master Vista machine that the image will be created from. USB boot key will be used, to create one see V-kb3 Create bootable USB disk with diskpart and WAIK Add ImageX.exe to the bootable USB disk, can be found in WAIK.

Prepare the master machine with sysprep

Sysprep.exe can be found on the Vista master machine at %WINDIR%\system32\sysprep folder.

Important: old version of sysprep will not work on Vista (example Windows XP sysprep)

Run sysprep and reboot the machine and boot with the USB key inserted.
Boot from the USB key/disk.
Browse to USB disk and run the following command (folder c:\Images must exist before this command can be used):

ImageX.exe /CAPTURE C: C:\Images\JBKB-Vista.wim "Windows Vista" /verify

Wait for the image to be created.

If you get Error 112 & There is not enough space on the disk when creating the image directly to an external USB disk it could be due to file system is FAT32 (4GB limit), then use the ImageX switch /split to create many .swm files or just problem with the USB disk (you can try to change usb port or restart USB disk or save it temporary on c: and when finished move it to the USB disk)

Now the wim file can be copied to a network share or similar with

net use z: \\jbkbserver\wim-images-share
copy c:\Images\JBKB-Vista.wim z:
