Introduction

Only Windows XP (32 bit) is possible to upgrade (in place) to Microsoft Vista.
To do that it needs to be done within Windows XP (not during boot).

Error "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed"

When upgrading within Windows XP to Windows Vista you can encounter the error:

Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed

This is due to problem for the upgrade to modify the boot loader.
To remedy this problem do the following:

  • Start regedit on the Windows XP machine that you want to upgrade to Windows Vista.
  • Right click on key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilters and chose Modify.

  • As Value data type in PartMgr and then click the OK button.

  • Restart your Windows XP machine and run the setup for Vista to upgrade.
